“Enough Is Enough”

Luke 18:35-43

“You will not change a situation until you are tired of the situation.”

I was speaking with a friend not too long ago about a situation they were in and how they wanted to leave. They were saying all of the right things and how they wanted to do certain things…and then it hit me. After I let them complete their statement, I said “you aren’t ready to go.”

They looked at me with a crazed look. “Why do you say that?” they asked.

“If you really wanted to leave, you would. It doesn’t take a dissertation to explain why you should leave. You don’t have to give a speech on the pros and cons — just leave.”

The blind man had been on this journey a long time. He was known as a beggar, sometimes being placed in “his spot” to receive from others that would give. He stayed there until he was either taken home or decided to leave that place. He did this day in and day out; he did this in the sun and in the rain. Sometimes, he didn’t want to do, but he did. Whatever he needed to do, albeit grudgingly or not, he was there.

But it came a point in his life when he decided enough was enough. He had made up in his mind that he wasn’t going to be this man anymore. He was on his spot and he heard something going on. When inquiring about the happenings, he heard that Jesus was coming by. This was confirmation that he would not be the same and he had finally come to his wits end. He had come to his right mind and said to himself, “enough is enough.” Instead of calling out for spare change, he started calling on Jesus; “enough is enough.”  Instead of holding his hand out for money, his hands were now raised for a blessing; “enough is enough.” They tried to stop him, but he yelled louder: “enough IS enough.”

Family, some of you are tired of your current situation. Some of you have been on this road for a long time; but you weren’t tired of it. Yes, you said you wanted a change, but it was just lip service. Day in and day out, you talked a great game, but failed to get IN the game. But let me tell you something: when you are getting tired of being down, you will find a way to get up. When you are tired of eating crumbs, you will find a way to eat a meal. If you are tired of doing something that brings no joy, you will find something that will. But only when you are ready to say “enough is enough” will you be ready. Enough of the mess, enough of the trials, enough of the he said-she said…ENOUGH! Waking up to the same thing, enough…aren’t you getting tired? Staying in the same place, enough. Doing the same thing and not progressing, Enough is enough.
