Indie Artist Spotlight: Leké Akinyemi

If you haven’t heard the name Leké Akinyemi yet, you’re not alone.  Hailing all the way from the UK, he is ready to let America and the rest of the world hear his voice and song with his official release of “Rodeo.”

Who is Leké Akinyemi? Well, he started singing at just seven (7) years of age by accompanying his older sister.  He is also a soulful singer, guitarist, songwriter as well as lead vocalist for Writeway-Music. Leké is a diverse artist with a passion for music and with a unique sound that draws from R&B, Indie, acoustic, and worship influenced.

Leké’s voice offers up soulful, smooth and melodious vocals which are rich in tone which shows his versatility.  That versatility is shown by his rap featured on the song “Rodeo.”  In fact, Leké reports that he was rapping before he started singing at the age of 7.  As a writer, Leké draws upon real life issues which a wide range of listener’s can relate to through his creativeness.

He has performed for huge crowds from the Caribbean to Europe — and of course the UK.  He has also collaborated with the likes of Dwayne Tryumf (International Gospel Artist), and Victizzle (MOBO Award winner of Best Gospel Act 2009) as well as others.

In 2011, Leké made his debut in acting portraying himself in Writeway-Music’s short film One Way, i.e., the movie based on the lives of the 4 members of Writeway-Music.  Leké has also had two other songs that were hits online: “Closer” and “Air I Breathe”.

2012 sees the release of Leké’s debut solo project “One Eye Open” which features the debut single“Rodeo”.  His album is slated to be released later this year; it will also include fan favorite “Closer”.   On this single Leké trades in his smooth vocals for rapping — which surprised many of his fans.   Leké is passionate about using “Rodeo” to inspire hope within the lives of all who hear; it portrays of the ups and downs that Christians face not only in life but with their faith as well.

He has states that “Just like a real life rodeo, life can throw us around and sometimes make us feel like we’ve hit the ground.  But in this song, I’m saying that I won’t give up and that I’ll persevere.”

Leké is currently on Writeway-Music’s One Way  film tour in the UK, i.e., promoting the film with screenings and live performances.  The film already premiered in London to a sold out audience.
