Bobby Womack – Nearer My God To Thee

Bobby Womack – Nearer My God To Thee

Robert Dwayne “Bobby” Womack (born March 4, 1944) was one of five sons born to Naomi and Friendly Womack in Cleveland. Bobby’s other brothers included Friendly, Jr., Curtis, Harry and Cecil. Bobby’s musical talents were first discovered by his father, who was a gospel musician and often played guitar. Bobby would often play his father’s guitar once Friendly Sr. would be away for work. Bobby only got caught when he broke a string off the guitar. Once Friendly Sr. discovered his son’s talent as well as the talents of his other sons, he formed The Womack Brothers and the quintet toured the gospel circuit where they attracted attention.

The Womack Brothers were spotted performing by then-Soul Stirrers frontman Sam Cooke who, upon meeting the boys following a performance, promised them that he would help them with their own careers after he established himself. Within five years of that meeting, Cooke made good on his promise and signed the act to his SAR Records label.  Main Source:  Wikipedia
